Small Frightened People

In his latest transformation of the “enemy”, the president bush would have us believe that “Islamo-fascists” are poised to descend on the ‘good christian people’ of Amerika, like a monolithic horde of ravenous locusts, in an apocalyptic vision from a bad LSD trip, and so he wants to torture people. Badly wants to. The CCMA* hasn’t yet, at least to my knowledge, presented this as the ravings of a lunatic. “The Enlightened One, the ‘Decider’, and Protector of the Realm, by the Grace of God, and Anointed by the Blood of His Son, Jesus”, has lost whatever tenuous hold on reality he may have had. In a news conference in the White House Rose Garden, Bush also emphatically rejected a statement by his former secretary of state, retired Gen. Colin L. Powell, that "the world is beginning to doubt the moral basis of our fight against terrorism." Bush said it was "unacceptable" to compare the actions of America with those of Islamic extremists who commit mass murder to achieve...

Mr Rove's Opus of Deception:

9/11 And The Lonesome Ballad of Blind Willie McMansion . By Phil Rockstroh 9/11/06 At present, Forty-six percent of the American people hold the delusion that Saddam Hussein was involved in the planning and execution of the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001. http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1169 This statistic comes to light as ABC/Disney airs a drama based on 9/11 containing the corresponding degree of historical accuracy regarding the circumstances leading up to the tragic events of that day as an average episode of The Flintstones in depicting daily life during the Stone Age. What are the cultural circumstances that allow such mass deceptions to be perpetrated with seeming impunity? Will these Rovian prevarications, so rife within the corporate media bubble, continue to define our life and times? Will our destinies, both individual and collective, continue to be determined by these pervasive deceits --- these pernicious narratives, concocted by cadres of elitist fabulists,...

The Disgraceful Plight Of American Poor

by Mary Pitt The adage that people should not condemn others until they have walked a mile in their shoes was never more true than today. It is one thing to read dry headlines outlining the plight of the American poor and the increase in their numbers. It is quite another to understand their plight without ever having lived in the conditions that they suffer today. We drive through their neighborhoods only when necessary and then, preferably, in daylight. We have developed the habit of not bothering to look at them and, Lord knows, most of them are not very pretty. We have developed the habit of thinking that they are not real human beings, preferring to refer to them, when such reference is necessary, by such terms as Those People, The Dregs of Society, or The Underclass, but we ignore them at our own peril. It has often been suggested that legislators should be required to live for a while on the income with which people on welfare or minimum-wage jobs must survive and rear their fam...

Palast Charged with Journalism in the First Degree

September 11, 2006 by Greg Palast It's true. It's weird. It's nuts. The Department of Homeland Security, after a five-year hunt for Osama, has finally brought charges against … Greg Palast. I kid you not. Send your cakes with files to the Air America wing at Guantanamo. Though not just yet. Fatherland Security has informed me that television producer Matt Pascarella and I have been charged with unauthorized filming of a "critical national security structure" in Louisiana. On August 22, for LinkTV and Democracy Now! we videotaped the thousands of Katrina evacuees still held behind a barbed wire in a trailer park encampment a hundred miles from New Orleans. It's been a year since the hurricane and 73,000 POW's (Prisoners of W) are still in this aluminum ghetto in the middle of nowhere. One resident, Pamela Lewis said, “It is a prison set-up" -- except there are no home furloughs for these inmates because they no longer have homes. To give a se...

No Mercy

By Sheila Samples "Character teaches above our wills. Men imagine that they communicate their virtue or vice only by overt actions, and do not see that virtue or vice emit a breath every moment." ~~ Ralph Waldo Emerson A year after triumphantly declaring that work in the Gulf Coast region would be "one of the largest reconstruction efforts the world has ever seen," after promising that "Americans will look back at the response to Hurricane Katrina and say that our country grew not only in prosperity, but also in character and justice," George Bush had the audacity to return to New Orleans. Unbelievable. Bush wore the same blue photo-op shirt of a year ago, with sleeves rolled up to show he meant business. With his trademark nod and wink, he said he accepted full responsibility for the government's breakdown in responding to the devastation -- a breakdown which cost many additional lives. After adding that he'd learned his lesson, Bush then launched...

GOP Hits Nat'l Security Breaking Point With New Ad

By David Sirota I saw the newly released ad (linked below) by the shadowy 527 group that helped President Bush in 2004, and all I could think is, I've really just about had it, and I think most Americans have also just about had it. The idea that the Republican Party can run around telling people with a straight face that it is serious about national security is just too hard to swallow anymore. This is the party that, according to the GOP-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee, lied us into the Iraq War - a war that counterterrorism officials have repeatedly said took our focus off the War on Terror, a war that removed special forces from the hunt for bin Laden in Afghanistan, a war that has served as one giant recruiting advertisement for radical Islamic jihadists. This is the party that has refused to implement the 9/11 commission recommendations; a party that was trying to slash counterterrorism funding before 9/11 at the very same time it was receiving critical warnings abou...

Speaking of Nazis

I would guess our little georgie wouldn't want this bit of his family fortune dredged up. One could make a case that his family is an ongoing criminal racketeering enterprise. And that spells RICO. “Bush - Nazi Dealings Continued Until 1951” - Federal Documents By John Buchanan and Stacey Michael from The New Hampshire Gazette Vol. 248, No. 3, November 7, 2003 http://www.nhgazette.com/cgi-bin/NHGstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=NN_Bush_Nazi_2 After the seizures in late 1942 of five U.S. enterprises he managed on behalf of Nazi industrialist Fritz Thyssen, Prescott Bush, the grandfather of President George W. Bush, failed to divest himself of more than a dozen "enemy national" relationships that continued until as late as 1951, newly-discovered U.S. government documents reveal. Furthermore, the records show that Bush and his colleagues routinely attempted to conceal their activities from government investigators. Bush's partners in the secret web of Thyssen-c...

The High Cost of Being Poor

By Barbara Ehrenreich August 17, 2006 http://www.zmag.org/sustainers/content/2006-08/17ehrenreich.cfm There are people, concentrated in the Hamptons and Beverly Hills, who still confuse poverty with the simple life. No cable TV, no altercations with the maid, no summer home maintenance issues -- just the basics like family, sunsets and walks in the park. What they don't know is that it's expensive to be poor. In fact, you, the reader of middling income, could probably not afford it. A new study from the Brookings Institute documents the "ghetto tax," or higher cost of living in low-income urban neighborhoods. It comes at you from every direction, from food prices to auto insurance. A few examples from this study, by Matt Fellowes, that covered 12 American cities: * Poor people are less likely to have bank accounts, which can be expensive for those with low balances, and so they tend to cash their pay checks at check-cashing businesses, which in the cities surveyed, ch...

Labor Day 2006

Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day. http://wilstar.com/holidays/laborday.htm I would say that the working classes haven’t progressed much further along in the struggle for equity. Regardless of what the nattering nabobs of punditry will say, there is no such thing as a ‘self-made’ man. No matter the station one is born into, we all depend on the sweat and labor of those who built the roads, the houses, the railroads and trucks. There is no way to escape that. Our teachers...

Enemies Who Believe ‘Things’

Bush Says We Better Beware of Enemies Because "They Believe Things" 8/31/2006 The Rude Pundit http://rudepundit.blogspot.com/2006/08/bush-says-we-better-beware-of-enemies.html It was one of those head-shaking, goddamned stupid statements that just makes you wanna disappear into a Bolivian village and tear up your guts with coca leaf moonshine and overcooked wild pig until you're so doubled over and shitting out your stomach lining that you don't give a fuck about anything but the sweet, slick kiss of death to take away the pain. Here's the President yesterday at a campaign dinner for Tennessee Republicans: "We face an enemy that has an ideology; they believe things." You got that? We're not facing a bunch of blank slates lashing out at all tabulas not rasa. They actually believe "things." What sorts of things, you may ask? George W. Bush has the answer: "The best way to describe their ideology is to relate to you the fact that they th...

A Majority In Search Of Leadership

by Mary Pitt A staggering number of Americans are totally discouraged by the political actions of both parties as Congress continues to rubber-stamp the recommendations of the Bush administration. People are leaving the party line in droves in their search for more progressive and democratic principles and are in rebellion against the growing similarity to police state tactics and controls of our everyday life as social programs are withdrawn and the people are left without the traditional supports for the poor, the elderly, and the handicapped. We watch, aghast, as the Constitution is trashed, elections are left in question, and the standard of living of the working class descends into near-poverty while the wealthy continue to increase their income and influence. Only one thing is lacking among these people and that is a cohesive leadership. There have been some who could have headed this movement but they are not so inclined. Howard Dean is safe and snug in the bosom of the Democrat...

First Lieutenant Ehren Watada

Statement on Behalf of Lt. Ehren Watada By Francis A. Boyle August 23, 2006 http://www.counterpunch.org/boyle08232006.html Fort Lewis Soldier Says He'll Refuse To Go To Iraq June 6, 2006 One generation ago the peoples of the world asked themselves: Where were the "good" Germans? Well, there were some good Germans. The Lutheran theologian and pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer was the foremost exemplar of someone who led a life of principled opposition to the Nazi-terror state even unto death. Today the peoples of the world are likewise asking themselves: Where are the "good" Americans? Well, there are some good Americans. They are getting prosecuted for protesting against illegal U.S. military interventions and war crimes around the world. First Lieutenant Ehren Watada is America's equivalent to Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Vaclav Havel, Andrei Sakharov, Wei Jingsheng, Aung San Suu Kyi, and others. He is the archetypal American Hero whom we should be bringing into our schoo...

Is it ‘Islamic’ Fascists or Freedom-Fascists?

by Yamin Zakaria (www.iiop.org) yaminz@yahoo.co.uk London, UK 8/21/06 Like most ‘ism’, Fascism was founded in Europe and it was practiced by Europe. So what has Fascism got to do with Islam? Absolutely nothing, because Fascism is inexorably linked to extreme nationalism, which is clearly forbidden by Islam, and therefore, Islamic-Fascism is an oxymoron and impossible for it to exist. According to the fascist ethos of ‘guilty until proven innocent’, Bush issued the guilty verdict of: “Islamic Fascists”, even before the suspects in custody had a chance to reach the court and state their case. They are 22 British Muslims of Pakistani descent and 2 British converts to Islam; all stand accused of a plot to blow up ten aircraft in mid-flight over the Atlantic. The media (CNN-FOX-MSNBC) was already reporting “Terror in the Air” as if something had already happened, while ignoring the real “Terror in the air” that was being delivered by Israel to the Lebanese civilians. I wonder what kind of f...
